Position Title: Summer Camp Instructors (Contract)

Position Summary:
As a youth and tech-focused educational organization, Under the GUI values creativity, energy, enthusiasm and a passion for all things tech. Under the GUI provides the opportunity to enjoy an enriching experience impacting our local youth while building strong connections and lasting knowledge and skills.

As an addition to our regular year-round program, Under the GUI is hosting summer camps with a wide range of topics such as “Coding & Animation“, “Robotics, Circuits & 3D Printing“, and “Mechatronics & Engineering Olympics“.

The summer camp will be run for six weeks (July 10 – August 14) at our main location in Kitsilano (Madrona) only. Visit our camp summary page for more information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach some of or all the aforementioned topics in a fun and playful manner (don’t worry, we will provide you with the teaching material)
  • Encourage students to further their creativity and critical thinking skills
  • Provide and ensure a creative, interactive, and engaging environment for kids
  • Welcoming students and parents/guardians each day
  • Participating in planning, implementation and leading fun and easy to follow outdoor activities
  • Ensuring the safety of each camper and preventing physical and verbal abuse
  • Working with individual campers who need extra support and attention

Qualifications:

  • Holder of, or working towards, a bachelor’s degree in computer programming, computer science, computer engineering or technology related preferred
  • Ability to convey complicated code in a simple manner for children to understand
  • Sector Vulnerability Check required under your municipality

Position Title: Instructor (Part-time)

Position Summary:
Instructors at Under the GUI are responsible for teaching students the core concepts of computer programming, and ensuring that they are being challenged during the learning process. They are also responsible for the provision of a fun and engaging environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaches students in learning the fundamentals of computer programming
  • Supports, encourages, and inspires students to further their creativity and critical thinking skills
  • Follows, and enhances the existing curriculum at Under the GUI
  • Prepares progress reports of the students for parents to assess twice per semester
  • Provides and ensures a fun, interactive, and engaging environment for students to thrive in during the learning process

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with Java, Unity, Game Maker Studio, Scratch, Game Maker Software and/or other game development kits
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of computer programming and related concepts
  • Minimum 1 year experience of working with children
  • Ability to convey complicated code in a simple manner for children to understand
  • Previous teaching/tutoring experience is preferred
  • Holder of, or working towards, a bachelor’s degree in computer programming, computer science, computer engineering or technology related field prefered
  • Sector Vulnerability Check required under your municipality

Position Title: Receptionist (Part-time)

Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Outreach Director and District Manager, the receptionist serves as the education leader responsible for managing the policies, regulations, and procedures to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe learning environment that meets the approved curricula and mission of the school.

The receptionist will work collaboratively to direct and nurture members of the school staff hired by the Board of Directors and to communicate effectively with parents. The receptionist will also be responsible for registration, scheduling, personnel management, emergency procedures, and facility operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Register new students, collect payment and provide invoices to parents
  • Input student and payment information into database
  • Inform parents to download programs (found on the forums), and to check their homework assignment weekly
  • Set up classroom and registration desk before the start of class
  • Regularly check on classes to ensure everything is running smoothly and solve any issues that may arise
  • Keep classes on schedule by ensuring students are set up at their computers and ready to begin and ensuring students are wrapping up and saving their games prior to the end of class
  • Check attendance notes and inform instructors of any students who will be absent
  • Ensure instructors are completing a reflection form after each class

Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least 2 years in a recognized post-secondary program
  • Previous related experience coordinating school programs
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Sector Vulnerability Check required under your municipality
